Profile of Professor Sylvester K. Danuor

Professor Sylvester Kojo Danuor is a Full Professor of Physics.

He attended Nandom Secondary School in the Upper West Region from 1972 to 1979 where did his O & A levels. He then attended the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, from 1979 to 1982 and graduated with BSc (Physics) from the Department of Physics. He served as a Teaching Assistant in the same Department for two (2) years. In October, 1984, he was appointed Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Physics, KNUST

In October, 1985, he gained a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to study Geophysics at the University of Frankfurt am Main in Germany. After a 6-month intensive German Language course, he studied Geophysics at the University of Frankfurt am Main and graduated in 1992 with a Masters in Geophysics with Geology, Mineralogy and Applied Physics as minor specializations.

In November, 1992, he was appointed a Lecturer in the Department of Physics of KNUST and was promoted to the rank of a Senior Lecturer in 2003.

He did his PhD work as a joint project between KNUST and the University of Frankfurt am Main, Germany and obtained the PhD degree in 2004.

Prof. S.K. Danuor was the Senior Tutor of University Hall (popularly known as Katanga) from 2002 to 2005. He was the Head of the Department of Physics from 2005 to 2007.

Prof. Danuor worked with and coordinated a number of international research projects and has attended quite a number of international conferences and workshops where he presented some papers.

From 1999 to 2004, he was the Coordinator of the Ghanaian – German Project on Geophysical and Remote Sensing Investigations of the Lake Bosumtwi Crater and the International Continental Scientific Deep Drilling of the Bosumtwi Crater. He was also a Member of the Lake Bosumtwi Basin Development Planning Committee established under the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council from 2000 to 2012.

Prof. Danuor was one of the Senior Members who spearheaded the introduction of the Meteorology and Climate Science Programme into the Department of Physics; he was therefore, the first Coordinator of the Meteorology and Climate Science Programme from 2007 to 2009.

He also coordinated the following International Projects at the local level: some EU-funded projects within the 7th Framework of the European Union such as the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis Project (AMMA), Quantifying Weather and Climate Imapcts (QWeCI) on Health in Developing Countries project, the Dynamics-aerosol-chemistry-cloud-interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA). Currently, he is the local project coordinator of the Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) African Science for Weather Information and Forecasting Techniques (African SWIFT) project.

In 2008, he was promoted to Associate Professor. From 2009 to 2011, he was the National President of the Ghana Science Association.

In 2012, Prof. Danuor served as Chairman, Planning and Resource Sub-Committee to review proposals for a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrated Art and Master of Integrated Art at the Department of Rural Art and Industry of KNUST; he also served as Chairman, Planning and Resource Sub-Committee to review proposals for BSc Waste Management and Public Health, BSc Agribusiness and BSc Business Administration, all of the University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies in 2013.

From 2010 to 2014, he was the  College of Science Representative on College of Engineering Appointments and Promotions Committee of KNUST.

From 2011 to 2015, he was the External Examiner/Moderator for the  Department of Applied Physics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale.

From 2012 to 2017 he was the College of Science Professorial Representative on Academic Board of KNUST.

In 2013, he served as Chairman of a three (3) Member Committee to study and finalize a proposal for autonomous Department of Food Science and Technology, College of Science, KNUST. 

From 2012 to 2016, Prof. Danuor served as the KNUST Representative on the Academic Board of the Christ Apostolic University College, an affiliate of the KNUST; he also served as the KNUST Representative on the Academic Board of Data Link Institute in Tema, an affiliate of the KNUST from 2017 to 2019.

He was the Vice-Dean of the former Faculty of Physical Sciences of KNUST from 2009 to 2012.

He became again the Head of the Department of Physics of KNUST from 2009 to 2017.  He was promoted to the rank of a Full Professor of Physics in 2013.

He has served on many Ad-hoc and Statutory Committees and Boards of the University including the Faculty Board, the College Board, Appointments and Promotions Sub-Committee of the College of Science, the Academic Board among others.

He has also served on the KNUST Council Search Committees for the Appointment of the Finance Officer and the Director of Health Services of the University in 2013, and the Accra Technical University Council Search Committees for the Appointment of Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Finance in 2018.

Prof. Danuor was the Chairman of the College of Science Quality Assurance Sub-Committee from 2018 to 2020.

In 2017, he was a Member of the Institutional Review Committee for Institutional Accreditation of KNUST; he was also a Member of the Committee to Evaluate KNUST for African Quality Rating Mechanism (AQRM)

He served as Chairman, Committee for Data Protection Policy for KNUST in 2017.

He has served as a Visiting Scholar/Research Scientist at Geophysics and related Departments at a number of foreign universities including the universities of Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Kiel, all in Germany; others are the University of Toronto, University of Alberta and the University of Waterloo, all in Canada; Stanford University in California and Duke University in North Carolina, all in the USA, and the University of Leeds, U.K.

He was also a member of a panel for PhD Examination of a Candidate at the University of Paris Sud in France.

He is a Member of the Governing Council of Accra Technical University (ATU) in Accra.

Professor S.K. Danuor is currently a Fellow of the prestigious Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS).

He is a Member of the Advisory Committee of Public Records and Archives  Administration Department (PRAAD), representing the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS).

He is also been the KNUST Representative on the Governing Council of Kessben College at Patriensa, near Kuntenase, Ashanti Region, since 2020.
