PROFILE OF PROFESSOR KWABENA NSIAH

Prof. Kwabena Nsiah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, KNUST. He obtained BSc Biochemistry with Second Class Upper in 1980, MPhil Biochemistry in 1986 and PhD Biochemistry in 2013, all from KNUST, Kumasi.

He did his National service as Teaching & Research Assistant (1980-1981), Demonstrator (1981-1985) and was appointed Assistant Lecturer (May 1985-January 1986), Lecturer (1986-1997), promoted to Senior Lecturer (1997-2013) and Associate Professor (1st August 2013- Date).

Prof. Nsiah’s areas of specialism are Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Enzymology. His research interest focuses on the study of characteristics of stroke patients, the anti-asthmatic and toxicological profile of Parquetina nigrescens, finding the causes of anaemia and its management options, study on some clinical and biochemical features of diabetics, studies on clinical, biochemical, haematological and other features of sickle cell subjects, metabolic syndrome and dietary pattern of diabetics, and setting up and operation of a clinical biochemistry laboratory for teaching, research and income generation.

He has supervised over a hundred undergraduate (BSc) and fourteen postgraduate (MPhil & MSc) students.

Prof. Nsiah has provided service to the University, Nation and International community in several capacities. These include: Executive Member-UST Branch (1982-1988), National Secretary (1989-1991) and Treasurer-Kumasi Branch (1991-1998) of Ghana Science Association, National Executive Member of the Ghana Biochemical Society (1998-2000), Member of Editorial Board of Ghana Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (1990-1998), Coordinator and supervised the running of a programme for updating the skills of Technicians from various Departments of KNUST (2017), drafted the  proposal for the establishment of a programme in Physician Assistantship at the Christian Service University College (CSUC),  College of Science Representative on Academic Board (2008-2009), Patron of Ghana Biochemical Students Association, KNUST branch (1990-2020), Chairman of the Management Committee of the Clinical Analyses Laboratory (CAnLab) of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (2003 to date),  External Examiner for the Department of Biochemistry (2011-2016), and  Department of Medical Biochemistry (2015-2017) University of Cape Coast, and Reviewer for Journals.

Prof. Nsiah was the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, Acting Dean, Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, Christian Service University College (August 2014 to 31st July 2015). He was also the Chairman of the Management Committee of Technocrat Magazine (2009-2021) and the Editor of the College of Science Newsletter (CoSNEWS) Magazine (2008-Date).
