Mr. Rabbi Darko, Counsellor of the College of Science at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, has highlighted the critical role of healthy workplace relationships and professional boundaries in promoting staff wellbeing and institutional efficiency.
Speaking at an administrative retreat organized for administrative staff, focused on personal branding, team building, and effective academic administration, Mr. Darko stressed that poor interpersonal dynamics could hamper productivity and hinder collaboration.
“Workplace relationships are central to how institutions function,” he noted, citing improved teamwork, knowledge sharing, and reduced stress as key benefits of positive professional interactions. “No one is a custodian of knowledge,” he added, warning that barriers in relationships often prevent the free flow of ideas between colleagues.
On professional boundaries, Mr. Darko urged staff to know their limits and respect the psychological space of their colleagues. “If you know your limit in the life of others, you can work with everybody,” he said, emphasizing that respecting limits is crucial for maintaining professionalism even in challenging situations.

He also cautioned against common boundary violations, including inappropriate language, prying into colleagues’ personal lives, and disregarding institutional authority. Staff were encouraged to address such issues calmly and promptly to prevent conflicts.
Highlighting the importance of trust, confidentiality, and empathetic listening, Mr. Darko noted that workplace friendships, when unmanaged, could compromise fairness and institutional integrity.
The retreat forms part of the College of Science’s efforts to strengthen its administrative systems and foster a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and accountability in line with KNUST’s broader mission.
