World Sight Day Celeberated by OSAG
OSAG Joins WORLD SIGHT DAY Celebration
The World Sight Day held on the second Thursday of October is the annual day of awareness to focus world-wide attention on vision impairment and blindness. The theme for this years World Sight Day was dubbed: UNIVERSAL EYE HEALTH, STRONGER TOGETHER. The Department of Optometry and Visual Science organized free eye screening for the Ayeduase community to commemorate the day.
The eye screening was led by Dr. Emmanuel Kobia-Acquah with the support of lecturers and students from the Department of Optometry. The motive for this eye screening programme was to bridge gap between eye care providers, the blind, the severely and not too severely visually impaired. Bringing the eye care service provider closer to such communities is a proactive measure for curbing such disease conditions.
Over one hundred and twenty people had their eyes screened under the auspices of this event. Majority of the people who turned out for exercise, were students who reported symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). There were also a few cases of glaucoma-“the silent thief of sight”. Patients received education on potential life styles for better eye care. For patients who reported with blurred vision, refraction was carried out to determine the extent of the refractive error and the appropriate spectacle prescription was administered. Patients who needed these services were referred to the College Eye Clinic. Other ophthalmic conditions that needed further care were also referred to the Eye Clinic for thorough examination and management.
This outreach was made possible by the financial and technical support from the following organizations: SIDGRACE Opticals, FOSPHIN Opticals and the Office of the Provost - College of Science.
