KNUST College of Science Celebrates 58th Congregation with Exceptional Achievements

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) College of Science has celebrated its 58th Congregation ceremony, marking the academic accomplishments of its graduates. The event, held on the seventh day of the Congregation series, brought together graduates, faculty, and distinguished guests. The Provost of the College of Science, Prof. Leonard Amekudzi, delivered a comprehensive address highlighting its achievements and commitment to academic excellence.

Academic Programmes and Vision

The College of Science comprises the Faculty of Biosciences and the Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences. Together, they house 11 academic departments offering various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences alone delivers seven undergraduate and 22 graduate programmes across departments such as Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Meteorology and Climate Science.

Prof. Amekudzi emphasised the College's mission to produce graduates with the skills and knowledge to drive industrial and economic development. He underscored the importance of fostering an environment that values quality teaching, cutting-edge research, and entrepreneurship underpinned by discipline, teamwork, and excellence.

Graduating Class Statistics

This year, the College of Science is graduating 2,271 undergraduate students. Among these, 1,365 are males (60%) and 905 are females (40%). A significant achievement is the 471 students graduating with First Class Honours, including 305 males and 166 females. The breakdown continues with 1,155 students earning Second Class Honours (Upper Division), comprising 673 males and 482 females, while 553 students graduated with Second Class Honours (Lower Division). The Pass category includes 92 students (47 males and 45 females).

The Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences presented 1,295 candidates, with 235 graduating with First Class Honours, 670 with Second Class (Upper Division), and 374 with Second Class (Lower Division). Sixteen students graduated with a Pass.

Valedictorian Announcement

The ceremony's highlight was the announcement of Prince Paa Kwesi Baiden as the Valedictorian of the Class of 2024. A graduate of the Department of Mathematics, Baiden earned the title of the College's overall best-graduating student with an impressive Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 87.07.
 

Teaching, Research, and Infrastructure Development

In teaching and learning, the College has invested in modern audio-visual equipment to enhance the classroom experience, exposing students to the latest technological advancements. A significant milestone was the accreditation of the Food Science and Technology Laboratories as ISO/IEC-certified testing facilities. Additionally, the renovated Biochemistry and Biotechnology Laboratories in the F.A. Kufuor Building now boast state-of-the-art facilities for advanced research and graduate training. These include specialised labs for biochemistry, immunology, nutrition, tissue culture, forensic science, and more.
