Professor Mathew Glover Addo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology (TAB). He is currently the Head of TAB and also the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences - KNUST.
Prof. Addo completed the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) in 1984 and the GCE (Advanced Level) in 1986 at the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School (SDASS), Bekwai.
In 1988, he gained admission into the then University of Science and Technology (UST), to pursue a four-year degree programme in Biological Sciences and completed the BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences programme in 1992 with a Second Class (Upper Division). He was retained at the Department for his National Service as a Teaching Assistant/Service personnel.
In August 1993, he was awarded a Norwegian Government Scholarship (Lanekassén) to study Biotechnology where he obtained both the Candidatus Magesterii (BSc) and Candidatus Scientiarum (MSc.) in 1996 and 1998, respectively, at the University of Bergen, in Norway.
In September, 2008, he obtained a French Government Scholarship to study for the simultaneous Doctor of Science/Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the prestigious Université Paris Sud IX, Paris, France and KNUST, Kumasi respectively. He completed the Doctorate programme in May, 2011, where he designed an efficient screening method for the identification of genes involved in the mitochondrial genome stability using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism.
Prof. Addo’s research areas include the following: Study of new nuclear genes involved in the stability and maintenance of the mitochondrial genome, using Caenorhabditis elegans as the model organism; Baseline study of the quality of drinking water delivery systems in Ghana as well as investigating into some resident microorganisms causing spoilage in some locally produced non-alcoholic beverages in Ghana. Applied and Environmental, Food and Water safety microbiology; and Molecular epidemiology of Malaria and co-infections (HIV, Helminths, Toxoplasma gondii, Trypanosome species).
He has authored many publications in international peer reviewed journals and conference presentations. He also won a number of grants for research and a recent one from DFG-German Research Foundation with Dr. Kingsley Badu on Animal African Trypanosomiasis in humans: An emerging zoonosis?
Prof. Addo has supervised and assessed five (three on-going) PhDs, about 40 Masters (MSc/MPhil) and over 100 BSc. students.
For his dedication and excellence in teaching, Prof. M.G. Addo was awarded the Best Senior Member in the Teaching Category of the 2017-2018 KNUST Excellence Awards in College of Science (CoS).
Prof. Addo is an academic with considerable experience in institutional management, University teaching, and membership of University Boards and Committees.
He has served in various capacities within the country and internationally as an External Assessor, Visiting Professor and Reviewer for several journals. He is a member of Professional Bodies namely: Ghana Science Association and University Teachers Association of Ghana
Prof. Addo is a team player who can lead and follow with equanimity. He is outspoken, candid and dispassionate in analysis of issues.

For over 16 years as a lecturer, my contribution to teaching in the University, in the Department of Theoretical an Applied Biology, Institute of Distance Learning and other Departments in the College of Science and the College of Health Sciences, KNUST has been exemplary. I was voted as the Best Senior Member (Teaching) by the College of Science in its maiden Excellence Award in 2018.

My association with our International Partners in sister Universities and other multinational organizations resulted in increased research and grant partnerships, Faculty and Student exchanges. Notables ones include:
- Departments of Soil and Environmental Science and the Food Science, ISA Lille, Lille, France: Support for the “3 + 2” students (12 students)
- Department of Biology and Chemistry, University of Bremen, Germany: Support for Postgraduate training (I PhD and 2 MPhil students).
- The French Embassy of Ghana: Support for “3 + 2” programme ( 8 students).
ACHIEVEMENT AS HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Within a relatively short period as the Head of the Department from 1st August 2016 to date, the Department has chalked the following modest but significant achievements in management and administration.
- Established a collaboration with the Departments of Soil and Environmental Science, ISA Lille, Lille, France
- Established a collaboration with the Department of Biology and Chemistry, University of Bremen, Germany.
- Purchased and Installation of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy equipment
Under my leadership, the Department in collaboration with the Department of Public Health have purchased and installed an Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy equipment in the Department to enhance our environmental monitoring research.
- Establishment of Molecular Biology Laboratory
As the Head of the Department and a Molecular Biologist, I have helped to establish a mini molecular biology laboratory for the Department.
- Installation of new Autoclave
With funding from the AFUF and under my leadership, the Department has purchased and installed an autoclave at the Microbiology Laboratory to aid in microbiological research.
- 2015/2016 University Ranking
Under my leadership, the Department came second in the 2015/2016 University Departmental Ranking held in 2017.
- Review of the Environmental Science Undergraduate Programme
After the Department had run the current Environmental Science undergraduate programmes for over 4 years, a review is being conducted to incorporate required changes to improve the quality of the programmes.
- Introduction of PhD programme in Environmental Science, Policy and Management
The department is facilitating the introduction of a PhD programme in Environmental Science, Policy and Management under BSU II project.
- Establishment of a new well-furnished conference room
In collaboration with BSU project, a new well-furnished conference room has been established in the department.
- Transformation of MSc. Environmental Science Programme
At the time of taking over as Head of Department in 2016, enrolment into existing two-year MSc. Environmental Science programme was very low. There was high attrition rate in the programme. I organized a review of the two-year MSc Environmental Science programme to run in one year. That same year (2017/2018 Academic year), enrolment shot up to over 60 students (an increment of about 50% from 2016/2017) .
- Increase in Enrolment
The Department had grown in terms of enrolment. Currently. the undergraduate student population has grown from 1,354 in the 2016/2017 Academic year to 1,842 in the 2018/2019 Academic year
- Enhancement of Teaching and Learning
As the Head of Department, I have worked and continue to work to enhance teaching and learning in the Department. In this direction, the following equipment and facilities have been procured to enhance teaching and learning using both internally and externally generated funds.
- Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Equipment
- LCDs for teaching in each laboratory and lecture Halls
- Air conditioners in each laboratory and lecture Halls
- PA Systems for teaching
- Renovation/Rehabilitation of Offices
The Head of Department’s office was refurbished to befit the status of a growing Department. In addition, a project to progressively refurbish offices of all staff with air conditioners, executive desks, swivel chairs, is ongoing.
- Renovation/Rehabilitation of Student Reading Room
Refurbishment of the students reading room at an estimated cost of One hundred thousand cedis (GH¢100,000.00) with funds from IGF and 10% AFUF.
- Improvement in Staff Strength
Since I took office, the teaching staff strength has increase from a total of twenty-five (25) Lecturers to twenty-seven (27) comprising the following:
