College of Science Hosts UKCEH Delegation to Deepen Research Collaboration

A delegation from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), accompanied by faculty from the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at the College of Science, KNUST, has paid a courtesy call on the Provost, Prof. Philip Antwi-Agyei, to reaffirm and explore opportunities for expanding collaboration in research, capacity building and scientific innovation.

The visit formed part of UKCEH's institutional engagements with selected research and academic institutions in Ghana aimed at strengthening existing partnerships and identifying new areas of collaboration.

During the meeting, Prof. Harry Dixon, Director of UKCEH International, and Ms. Adelaide A. Asante, Head of the UKCEH West Africa Office, outlined the organization’s activities in Ghana, highlighting key achievements, ongoing projects and future opportunities for collaboration with KNUST.

Discussions focused on several joint initiatives, including the Early Warning for the Energy Sector (EW4Energy) Project, capacity-building programmes in air quality modelling and researcher exchange opportunities that have supported cross-institutional collaboration and complementary research visits.

Receiving the delegation, Prof. Antwi-Agyei commended the strong partnership between UKCEH and the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, describing the collaboration as instrumental in advancing research and developing scientific capacity.

He reaffirmed the College of Science's commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and strengthening international partnerships that generate evidence-based solutions to pressing environmental and societal challenges.

Prof. Antwi-Agyei noted that the College is home to a vibrant community of early-career researchers whose work spans diverse scientific disciplines aimed at addressing national and global development challenges.

He expressed confidence that expanding collaboration between the College and UKCEH would harness this expertise to deliver impactful research outcomes, assuring the delegation that the College remained committed to producing high-quality results through sustained research partnerships and knowledge exchange.

The courtesy call underscored the shared commitment of both institutions to deepening scientific collaboration, promoting knowledge exchange and supporting research that addresses climate, environmental and sustainable development priorities in Ghana and beyond.
