Department of Physics Welcomes Senior High School Students, Showcases STEM Career Opportunities

The Department of Physics at the College of Science, KNUST has hosted selected students from senior high schools within Obuasi and its environs for an educational visit aimed at fostering interest in Physics and promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The visit formed part of the Department's outreach initiatives to engage young learners through interaction with faculty, exposure to university research and academic life, and opportunities to showcase their own scientific innovations.

During the engagement, the students presented a number of science projects they had developed, demonstrating creativity, innovation and practical approaches to solving real-world challenges. Faculty members commended the students for the quality of their work and encouraged them to continue pursuing scientific inquiry.

Welcoming the students, the Head of the Department of Physics, Prof. Francis Kofi Ampong, praised their enthusiasm for science and urged them to remain committed to academic excellence.

He highlighted the diverse opportunities available through the study of Physics, noting that the discipline underpins advances in fields including astronomy and space science, renewable energy, materials science, electronics, medical physics, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

He encouraged the students to view Physics not only as an academic discipline but as a gateway to developing solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges through research, innovation and technology.

The visit also provided an opportunity for students to interact with faculty members, learn about undergraduate programmes offered by the Department, and gain first-hand insight into studying Physics at KNUST.

The engagement underscores the Department of Physics' commitment to strengthening partnerships with second-cycle institutions and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Through such outreach activities, the Department continues to promote STEM education while encouraging talented young people to pursue careers that contribute to national development and scientific advancement.
