The Triumph of KNUST Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz 2023

The much-anticipated fourth edition of the Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz (JSMQ) in 2023 unfolded with grandeur, encompassing a rigorous selection process across the Northern, Western, Greater Accra, and Ashanti regions of Ghana. This meticulous journey led to the identification of schools that would not only participate but showcase their academic prowess on the esteemed national stage.

In the Northern Region, a cadre of notable schools emerged as contenders, including Belhaven Montessori JHS, Kamina Barracks JHS, Bace Model School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, and Kamina Barracks JHS. The Western Region made a significant contribution to the intellectual tapestry with schools such as Barbara International School, Naval Base Basic School, Ahenemba International School, Bedu Addo Methodist Junior High School, and New Pathways Academy.

The Greater Accra region displayed its academic diversity with eight qualifying schools, featuring Nautical Goodwill School-Nungua, De Youngster's International School, Star Holy Kingdom Academy, Rising Star Montessori, Tema Parents Association School, Ashridge International Montessori School, St. Joseph R/C, and Atomic Hills 2 Basic School. Meanwhile, the Ashanti region presented nine qualifying schools, including Good Shepherd R/C, KNUST Basic Junior High School, Matta Devi Basic School, Kyere Educational Complex, New World School, Galaxy Sterling Community School, Global Community School, Best Brain International School, and Manna International School.

On November 26th, the selected schools gathered at the KNUST Independence Hall for the commencement of the National Competition, marking the beginning of an exciting journey. To provide inspiration to the participants, a comprehensive laboratory tour of KNUST's science and engineering laboratories was organized, fostering a deeper understanding and interest in the academic field.

JSMQThe main competition commenced on November 29th, 2023, revealing the prowess of nine outstanding schools: Belhaven Montessori JHS, Bedu Addo Methodist Junior High School, Barbara International School, Global Community School, Good Shepherd R/C, Kyere Educational Complex, KNUST Basic Junior High School, Best Brain International School, and Manna International School. Following three batches of intense contests, the semi-finalists emerged as Manna International School, KNUST Basic Junior High School, and Barbara International School.

In the opening address by Prof Leonard K. Amekudzi, Provost, College of Science, he extended heartfelt congratulations to the finalists, urging them to give their best performances and alleviate any tensions associated with the competition.

Prof. Akwasi Preko, Chairman of the Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz, delivered a compelling speech, emphasizing the vital role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in shaping the nation's future. Quoting Albert Einstein, Prof. Akwasi Preko underscored the importance of relentless questioning and curiosity in the pursuit of knowledge. He encouraged schools that did not reach the grand finale, stating, "If today is not your day, tomorrow will be yours, so you should continue to work hard without giving up."

Prof. Akwasi Preko added, "Junior Science and Maths Quiz is demystifying the study of STEM subjects, transcending beyond the boundary of the normal quiz." He shared success stories of past contestants who excelled in their senior high school education, contributing significantly to various institutions.

Pleading for public support and sponsorship, Prof. Akwasi Preko envisioned a bright future for Ghana as the sparks ignited in the competition evolve into flames of brilliance over the next decade. He also called for mentors to guide participants on their educational journey.

KNUST Basic

The grand finale witnessed KNUST Basic Junior High School emerging as the 2023 Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz champions with an impressive score of 45 points. Manna International School followed closely with 38 points, and Barbara International School secured the third position with 15 points.

As the curtains closed on the 2023 Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz, it marked not just a competition but a significant stride towards nurturing the nation's future innovators and leaders in science and technology. The event showcased the excellence and potential of Ghana's young minds, setting the stage for a brighter and more innovative future.
