A delegation from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in the United States has engaged the College of Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to explore collaboration in cybersecurity, student exchange and joint research initiatives.

The delegation was led by Prof. Corey Leclerc, Dean, and included Dr. Robert Balch, Director of the Petroleum Recovery Research Center, Prof. Tan Nguyen, Professor of Petroleum Engineering, and Prof. William Ampomah, Professor of Petroleum Engineering.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the College of Science to strengthen international partnerships and create new opportunities for students and researchers.

During a meeting with officials of the College, the Provost, Professor Phillip Antwi-Agyei said the College was keen to strengthen partnerships that would benefit students and expand research and training opportunities.

“In the area of cybersecurity, we will be very much interested in any support you would have for us,” he said.

He added that the College was ready to deepen collaboration through initiatives such as a proposed 3+2 student exchange programme, which would allow students to study across the two institutions.

“The College is more than ever ready to get involved in this kind of collaboration, especially with the 3+2 student exchange,” he said. “We are also looking at how students from Computer Science, Mathematics and Actuarial Science and other departments can benefit from this collaboration and develop strong interests in cybersecurity.”

According to him, the College already has an initiative and programme outline aimed at advancing cybersecurity training and research at the undergraduate level but would welcome support through the partnership to scale it up.

“You are always welcome, and we are interested in this collaboration,” he said.

Members of the delegation also expressed interest in expanding engagement beyond the College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to include departments within the College of Science.

They expressed interest in organizing a symposium that would bring together faculty and researchers from both institutions to discuss potential research partnerships, academic exchanges and collaborative projects.
