Dr. Gabriel Kwaku Agbeshie, an alumnus of the Department of Optometry and Visual Science at the College of Science, KNUST has been named a fellow of the Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Fellowship (DCERF), a global initiative aimed at supporting emerging vision scientists from developing countries.
He was selected under the fellowship programme run by the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research, which supports young researchers by providing access to the latest developments in vision science and opportunities to connect with global researchers, mentors and industry leaders.
The DCERF programme brings aspiring scientists from developing nations to the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
Fellows are assigned experienced ARVO members who serve as mentors throughout the meeting and participate in networking and orientation sessions designed to strengthen research capacity in their home countries.
Established in 2008, the fellowship has supported 173 researchers from 51 countries, according to the ARVO Foundation.
The fellowship package includes travel and accommodation for the ARVO Annual Meeting, meeting registration, one year of ARVO membership and continued support through the DCERF alumni and mentorship community.
The ARVO Foundation for Eye Research, established in 2001 and based in Rockville, Maryland, funds research, education and outreach initiatives in vision science globally.
Its programmes support travel fellowships, research grants, leadership development and international scientific collaboration aimed at advancing sight-saving research.
Dr. Agbeshie’s recognition adds to the growing international visibility of researchers trained at KNUST in the field of eye and vision science.
