The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is proud to be a key partner in a groundbreaking climate research initiative aimed at improving weather warnings and protecting Ghana’s energy sector from storm-related risks.
As part of the EW4Energy project, we are collaborating with the University of Leeds, Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), University of Cape Coast, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and others to develop advanced tools and train the next generation of scientists capable of tackling Ghana’s pressing climate challenges.
EW4Energy is enhancing storm prediction and early warning systems by deploying ground-based lightning observation sensors across Ghana. These sensors will deliver critical data for forecasting extreme weather events—particularly important for Ghana's energy infrastructure, which is highly vulnerable to lightning and storms.

Aligned with the UN’s Early Warning for All campaign, the initiative will leverage high-frequency lightning data from the Meteosat Third Generation satellites and test the Forecasting African Storms Application (FASTA) app to provide real-time, localized storm predictions.
We’re especially proud of the project’s commitment to education and inclusion. From secondary school outreach—focused on inspiring young women—to university-level training in coding, programming, and machine learning, EW4Energy is equipping students with skills that will shape the future of climate science.
