Mr. Joseph Baafi, an MPhil (Applied Mathematics) student of the Department of Mathematics of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has been invited to attend and participate in the Clinic on the Meaningful Modelling of Epidemiological Data. The Clinic is to be held from May 30th to June 10th, 2016 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg, South Africa. Joseph Baafi completed his BSc (Mathematics) degree at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in June, 2013. He was subsequently admitted to pursue a Master’s programme in Mathematical Sciences at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Ghana and upon successful completion was awarded a bursary to pursue the MPhil research programme in Applied Mathematics at KNUST under the supervision of Dr. F.T. Oduro.

Joseph has been asked to give a poster presentation on his research titled ‘Modelling the effect of post-mortem contact on the spread of Ebola with quarantine as an intervention’ at the meeting. During the Clinic, participants will be divided into groups and given project topics to work on. 

The Clinic is aimed at emphasizing the use of data in understanding infectious disease dynamics. The Clinic will bring together graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and researchers from North America and Africa, with the goal of engaging participants in epidemiological modeling projects that use real data to grapple with practical questions in a meaningful way.
