During the launch, a speech was delivered by Prof. (Mrs) Atinuke Olusola Adebanji who represented the Pro Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo. She stated in the speech that the University would give each competitor of the best three (3) schools a tablet alongside different prizes.

Prof. Adebanji told the various schools that were present that the University would also take a key interest in the education of the contestants for each of the three schools for each year’s edition. “We will monitor their education from the secondary level to the tertiary level and provide guidance”, she said.

The Junior Science and Maths Quiz, she said, was introduced in 2019 by Master Eric Kwabena Appiah and Master Derick Kyei Boakye (KNUST alumni and CEOs of ERIDEC), to Prof. (Mrs) Ibok Oduro who was then the Provost of the College of Science. This led to the maiden edition of the quiz which took place in 2019. The current Provost of the College of Science, “Prof. Leonard Kofitse Amekudzi, and his team further discussed this vision with us as University Management”, she added.

Prof. Adebanji also stated that the vision was in line with the Strategic Objectives and Theme 7 of the KNUST Corporate Strategic Plan (2016-2025) and because of this, the University Management decided to adopt the quiz competition to enable the University to reach out to young people and promote the study of science, mathematics, and technology among young people in Ghana. “Our vision is to roll out the competition across the entire country and also provide attractive packages not only to winners but also to most of the competing schools, especially the less privileged ones”, she added.

She gave appreciation to Ultimate FM and GHOne TV for accepting to partner with KNUST in terms of the Junior Science and Maths Quiz. “Nobody partners with KNUST and gets disappointed”, she assured. Prof. Adibanji also showed gratitude to GTP, Kingdom Books and Stationery, and Coca-Cola and also extended an invitation for other partners and sponsors.
