College of Science Postgraduate Scholarship Award Scheme
1. Background
The College of Science (CoS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has the vision to produce high calibre science graduates to support and sustain the industrial and economic development of Ghana and beyond. The CoS strives to push the frontiers of knowledge through critical thinking and problem-based research of global importance. By so doing, the postgraduate students of the CoS will be spurred on to discover and fulfil their potentials in various fields of science and prepare them for careers in an ever-changing and competitive global environment through cutting edge research. Such researches must produce outputs that are readily adoptable for the economic and human development of Ghana and beyond. Accordingly, the CoS has introduced a scholarship scheme to support postgraduate research students in all departments within the college to undertake research projects within its priority areas.
2. Categories and Duration of Scholarships
The scholarships are open to Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student of CoS. A successful applicant shall be awarded an amount of ten thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢ 10,000.00) per annum. In addition, the student shall be exempted from payment of the 30% administrative fees being the Research support fees paid by all graduate students, to the host department.
The duration of the award to the successful PhD shall be two (2) academic years and for MPhil students, one academic year.
3. Qualification Criteria
3.1 MPhil Award
For the award of the MPhil scholarship, the student must::
- have a first degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in a relevant discipline from a recognised Institution;
- have met the mandatory one year post-qualification national service (if from Ghana) as of the time of beginning the study;
- have a research proposal within the priority areas of the host department or is already undertaking a research within the priority areas of the host department
- demonstrate proficiency in English language; and
- submit two recommendation letters, one of which must come from an academic institution
3.2 PhD Award
For the award of the PhD scholarship, the student must:
- have a second degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised institution;
- have a research proposal within the priority areas of the host department or is already undertaking a research within the priority areas of the host department;
- demonstrate the ability to undertake scholarly research;
- demonstrate proficiency in English language; and
- submit two recommendation letters, one of which must come from an academic institution.
Continuity of the PhD award is subject to satisfactory progress report from the supervisory team and the head of department.
4. Application and Selection Process
Applicants are required to download and fill-out an application form (below). All the required supporting documents must be provided at the time of submitting the application. Incomplete applications shall not be considered. The deadlines for submission of the application form and all supporting documents shall be announced when the application process is open. Only electronic submissions received by the deadline will be considered.
The completed application form should be submitted to the respective Head of Department and copy to the office of the Provost of the College of Science (email address provost.sci@knust.edu.gh).
