Call for Application: For the Position of a Research Assistant for “The Ghana Children’s Eye Study (GCES)” Project

ABOUT THE GCES PROJECT 

The College of Science Office of Grants and Research, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to support an ongoing research project titled “The Ghana Children’s Eye Study (GCES)” at the Department of Optometry, College of Science, KNUST. The study aims to establish a vision screening program to determine the prevalence, incidence and potential modifiable risk factors of pediatric ocular diseases including refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, and allergic eye diseases in Ghanaian school children. Additionally, the costeffectiveness of incorporating a vision screening program in the basic school system in Ghana will be assessed. The study will ensure early detection and treatment of visual impairments before they affect children's educational outcomes.  

 

POSITION 1: RESEARCH ASSISTANT

 

• RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Research Assistant will support the day-to-day implementation of the project and will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with participant recruitment and coordination with schools and parents
  • Supporting the informed consent and child assent process
  • Administering interviewer-led questionnaires
  • Scheduling clinic visits and maintaining participant records
  • Supporting clinic activities during examination days
  • Data entry and basic data management
  • Ensuring proper documentation and confidentiality
  • Performing other official duties assigned by the Principal Investigator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Optometry, Public Health, Nursing, Psychology, Social Sciences, or a related field
  • Interest or experience in health research or data collection
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with children and parents
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and strong report writing skills
  • Diligent, safety-conscious, and ability to work independently and collaboratively

DURATION OF CONTRACT

  • Twelve (12) Months
